While summertime nail trends across the U.S. focused on beach vibes, iridescent, pink and coral shades, fall 2018 nail trends will be less reserved than in past seasons. Fall nail art is inspired by rich textures and luxe dark shades – perfectly blending in with the beautiful autumn leaves that will start turning color by October. Keep reading to find out what you should be wearing on those beautiful nails this year!
8 Fall Nail Trends to Try in 2018
Trend 1: Two-Toned with White Tips
Two-tone nail art is nothing new, but usually you see it with white French manicured tips on nude nails. This fall, however, Essie nail artist Julie Kandalec suggests pairing a blood-red nail with white tips for a refined, yet unique manicured look. For a memorable night out, another take on the trend is using a metallic shade such as silver (try Essie’s No Place Like Chrome, $9) or gold and pairing it with a coral tip.
Trend 2: Dark Nail Lacquers
This year’s Oscar De La Renta fall fashion collection features deep reds and royal purples, so to match the look, Kandalec turns to dark nail lacquers in various shades of wine and eggplant, all the way to a glossy black. Try OPI Nail Lacquer in Black Onyx ($10.50 from Ulta Beauty).
Trend 3: Glitter
With this year’s glitter trend, you won’t feel like you’re stepping onto the dance floor of Studio 54, rather, you’ll love the elegant way metallic glitter polish across the tips of your nails feels like an updated French manicure. File the nails into a square tip, and the glitter tips look more like a graphic complementing your look than making a bold statement. For a fantastical mermaid meets unicorn glittery look, try a two-toned effect with purple Roxy Nail Lacquer and Selene Nail Lacquer, a deep teal polish with a metallic pearl finish and shimmering aqua flecks – both available from Zoya. (Zoya is a natural nail polish brand offering high-quality products without harmful chemicals, including DBP, camphor, toluene, formaldehyde, and formaldehyde resin.)
Trend 4: Retro Art
For those who want to ditch the predictable wine-red autumnal polish this year, embrace the retro patterns of the ‘60s with flowery painted nails in blues and yellows. Or, head to your nail salon’s most talented artist to get a special rendition of ‘80s Memphis-Milano or postmodern art on your nails. It may take a while for this one-off, but you’ll certainly stand out of the crowd! If you’d like a simpler version of this look, try geometric art shapes and colors.
Trend 5: Mismatched Manicure
For a funky feel, try mixing up your manicure with different shades of pink (or another favorite color)! For example, paint all five fingers on one hand in a vibrant shade, lacquer the pinky, pointer finger, and thumb of the other hand in a slightly darker shade, and then make the other two nails a pastel, light pink. It sounds odd, but the color scheme will look fantastic, especially if the shades match your outfit. Another option is to wear all your favorite shades at once!
Trend 6: Tiny Studs
For a glamorous feel that doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg, try a minimalist studded manicure by placing tiny gemstones on nude, clear lacquered nails. We promise it won’t make you look bedazzled!
Trend 7: Fierce Style
Explore your wild side with a spin on the animal print pattern. Opt for neon animal print on your nails instead! Try Essie’s Tart Deco (a coral shade, available for $8.99 from Target), or try a violet or hot pink shade (like Sally Hansen’s Crayola Insta-Dri Nail Color in Razzmatazz, available for $5.49 from CVS) to draw macaroni shapes or single dots. Top off the look by filing your nails into sharp points – perfect for a devilish Halloween! (Red works well if you’re going that direction.)
Trend 8: Glamazon
Glamorous, sexy silhouettes aren’t just a fashion statement – they can be expressed through nail art too! Tadashi Shoji's runway show featured metallic burgundy nails covered in a cage-like mesh. Color + texture = WOW factor.
